UDD designated Ashoka Changemaker Campus
August 28 / Santiago-Concepción, Chile. Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) has been designated as “Changemaker Campus of Ashoka U” for its role as leader in social innovation and training of agents of change, becoming the first Chilean institution to be part of this worldwide network.
Since 2008 more than 40 universities throughout the world have received this designation. The UDD will bring its experience and commitment to Public Responsibility and Social Innovation both in Chile and in South America, an experience that has begun since its founding 28 years ago.
The UDD will join the Changemaker Campus network – a global and dynamic community of students, administrators, teachers and community partners who share inspiration, connections and a commitment to broaden the reach and impact of social innovation and change in the world. Thus, recognition is the result of a rigorous selection process.
Ashoka U is an initiative of Ashoka, the largest global network of social entrepreneurs and change agents. The program recognizes globally higher education institutions that have shaped social innovation and the generation of changes in their culture, programming and operations and are committed to partnering in the network in order to turn social innovation and change into the new norm in all higher education.
“We are tremendously proud to be the first Chilean university to receive this designation. It is undoubtedly an impulse to continue to train students who become leaders and agents of change, entrepreneurs, committed to public responsibility and social innovation, whose first objective is always to positively impact society, detecting real problems to address them through concrete solutions. We want to continue to be a contribution to the development of Chile and living testimony that education means to inspire and transform” declared Federico Valdés, rector of the UDD.
According to the Ashoka authorities, students need interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial and goal-oriented skills to be successful in the complex world of today that is changing at a rapid pace.
“Students are looking for meaning and a viable career in which they can thrive and contribute,” said Ashoka U co-founder and CEO Marina Kim. “Social innovation skills focus on developing empathy, creativity, collaboration, and problem solving, and prepare students to add value to the world, whether they innovate within existing organizations or start their own organization”
